Occupation
As discussed previously being forced to live in cheap inner city housing causes many children to receive subpar education in underfunded schools. The lack of capital to pay for college coupled with a poorer public education causes many children born into poverty to be marginalized occupationally. The foundation most decent paying jobs is a college degree. It provides specialized knowledge needed for students professions of choice. Besides knowledge degrees show to future employers that an individual can make a commitment and follow through with it. Fair or not, lacking a college degree makes people ineligible for many jobs. According to a survey performed by the University of Minnesota, The poor typically hold service based and manual labor type jobs, such as a nursing aid, cashier, cook, housekeeper, janitor, waiter/waitress, or low end construction jobs. The middle class or rich generally have managerial, supervisional , or jobs requiring specialized skills, such as office manager, sales supervisor, lawyer, doctor, or software developer(UM). Due to discrimination and hardships caused by poverty the poor find themselves unable to work their way out of poverty because they don't have the experience or education to obtain a decent paying job. Social Discrimination In modern society peoples "prestige" is often based off of their income and their profession as well as their college degrees. The more money someone makes, the more advanced their degree, and the harder their job is to get the more respect they receive, fair or not. Poor peoples lack of higher education hinders them from finding decent jobs and working their way out of poverty. This consequently makes many think of the poor as "lazy" or "stupid". The poor are then made the but of many jokes and stereotypes. |
